On Tuesday this week, the whole of Year 5 and 6 were invited down to Lipson Co-operative Academy to listen to a talk by renowned children's author, Jon Mayhew.
We learnt about Jon's struggles with reading in school and the ways in which he had kept his imagination and creativity alive in his younger years. He then went on to explain how he rediscovered his love of reading as a young teenager, through a good friend and a mutual love of comic books. We discovered that this love of comics would eventually shape the title of his first published novel, Mortlock.
It was a pleasure to hear an author talk so honestly and humorously about the highs and lows of their life and work. The children were certainly a captive audience and when the opportunities arose, they provided insightful answers to questions and offered thoughtful ones of their own.
At the end of the session, the children (and staff) had the opportunity to purchase some of Jon's books and had the privilege of meeting with Jon during a book signing.
